Teams for the UEFA Women’s U17 Championship have been announced
On March 29, the teams that qualified for the UEFA Women’s U17 Championship were revealed. Eight teams will compete for the title in Estonia from May 14th to 26th.
A total of eight teams made it to the final tournament: England, France, Germany, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and among them the host Estonia. The draw for the two groups of four for the final tournament will take place in exactly two weeks, on April 13, after which the exact calendar of games will be revealed.
France and Germany were the last to secure their place yesterday, on March 29. France beat Ireland 6-1 and won the group with 9 points. Germany had a thrilling battle with Portugal to deicide on the final spot. After the match ended in a 2:2 draw, both teams had seven points in the group table. Therefore, the goal difference, which was 16:11 in favor of Germany, decided the advance.
Germany is a 13-time winner of the UEFA Women’s U17 Championship finals, last year they defeated Spain in the final. In the past, Spain has won the title four times and Poland once. After a long break, Sweden, who last qualified in the 2012/13 edition, is back in the final tournament. Switzerland has also returned, having last participated in the tournament in 2012/13 when they took second place. France has won the silver medal twice and reached the semi-finals last year.
In the spring of 2023, Estonia will host a major event for girls’ football: the European champion of the Under-17 age group will be determined at the final tournament held here. The final tournament will officially kick off on May 14, when the first group matches will be held. The tournament will culminate in the final match on May 26, which will be played at Lilleküla Stadium, the national stadium of Estonia.
Anyone interested can contribute to the success of this year’s big event of Estonian women’s football as a volunteer by participating in three main areas: transport, match organization and logistics. For registration, a form must be filled out before April 3. After the deadline, interviews will be conducted with the candidates.
